Reinventing the Kitchen Experience Online
As lockdowns kept people at home, we turned to Zoom, Instagram, and Facebook Live to continue sharing our love for cooking. With cameras balanced on benches and chefs adjusting to new tech, we learned how to turn our hands-on kitchen classes into interactive, online experiences.
Over time, we found our rhythm. And with that came something even more powerful than we expected—a new kind of virtual cooking experience, complete with ingredient kits delivered to your door.
A New Trend: Cook-Along Classes With Ingredient Kits
Over the past six months, one thing has become clear: people love cooking along in real-time. Our cooking hampers—carefully packed ingredient kits—make it possible. We send participants everything they need to cook dishes like dumplings, ramen, or curry from scratch, following along with our chefs via Zoom.
It’s no longer just about watching someone cook on screen. It’s about getting your hands dirty, tasting the results, and sharing a sensory experience, even while remote. This has proven especially popular for corporate meetings, virtual team-building events, and celebrations at home.
Three Ways to Experience Online Cooking
Otao Kitchen offers three styles of online cooking classes:
-
Pre-recorded Demonstration Classes
This is the traditional model—our chefs demonstrate a recipe on video, which viewers can watch anytime. It’s convenient and informative, but can’t compare to the energy of a live experience. -
Live Zoom Classes (with registration)
These interactive sessions are perfect for groups. Attendees can ask questions in real time and engage with the chef. With limited class sizes, everyone gets a chance to participate and learn. -
Live Cook-Along Classes With Ingredient Kits
Our fastest-growing experience! Participants receive an ingredient box delivered to their home or office, then cook together over Zoom with our chefs. This format combines the ease of remote access with the hands-on excitement of real-time cooking. It’s ideal for remote teams, family bonding, or even client engagement activities.
Behind the Scenes: What We Learned
Creating these virtual experiences hasn’t been without challenges:
-
Not everyone has a fully stocked kitchen.
We've designed our kits and recipes to be flexible and adaptable, ensuring anyone can participate—whether they’re in a small apartment or cooking with kids at home. -
Filming is different than live cooking.
Every step needs to be broken down for the camera. Timing is slower, and chefs need to clearly explain each part of the process. -
Guest expectations are higher.
In the beginning, people were forgiving of technical hiccups. Now, they expect a smooth, studio-quality experience. And we’re proud to say—we’ve risen to the challenge.
Why It Works for Corporate Teams
Online cook-alongs with ingredient kits offer companies a fun, hands-on way to connect their teams—especially with remote or hybrid work environments. Cooking together breaks the ice, encourages collaboration, and brings people together around a shared meal.
Whether you’re planning a virtual client event, end-of-year celebration, or remote team-building session, our online cooking hamper experiences deliver a memorable and meaningful connection.
